The Top 5 Mistakes Most MLM Beginners Make

As stated in My Story, it was not pretty when I started in this awesome industry. I made some mistakes that a typical beginner in MLM makes.

I was speaking with one of my buddies whom we started MLM together offline sometimes ago, he has since given up, and while speaking it occurred to me that we would have gotten some tremendous results if we had tweaked our strategies then.

The truth is that we exerted a lot of energy those days and we kept pushing on even when things were so ugly. It’s a pity he no longer believes in the industry and I have since found out that it is easier to go after people hungry for the kind of opportunity our industry offers than chase after those that have become very bitter because of some ineffective strategies employed which led to some frustrating times.

I tell you the truth, there is nothing like having someone tell you what you are likely to face in the ring and getting prepared for the challenges ahead.

That’s why I bring you the top five mistakes I see a lot of people who are just getting started in MLM make. If you are just starting your career in MLM and you don’t make these mistakes I assure you that you have a very high chance of succeeding.

Avoidable Mistakes MLM Beginners Make

The following are the avoidable mistakes most MLM beginners make:

  •         Saying Too Much

In my estimation, this has to be the most common mistake I see a lot of newcomers to this industry make. They talk too much.

And I understand why. A lot of people coming to this industry are excited about the potential and cannot wait to pour it on everyone they know, so they do all they can to tell their prospects everything about the company, product, compensation plan etc at once.

It doesn’t work. In as much as the initial enthusiasm can help you get started fast, you must channel it the right way. How do you do that? Channel it to generating interest about your business opportunity so that you can invite. Yeah, invite.

Your only job is to invite your prospects to a presentation (whether online and offline). Let a third-party tool do all the talking for you and you just hold your peace.

This happens all the time: I get to a place and a downline wants me to speak to someone who has been informed about my company and is not interested because the right things have not been said. I am yet to master that art, but cmon, don’t make things difficult for me, or your upline(s). :)

This does not just save you the agony of saying the wrong things to the right people, it also saves you time. Which would you choose: explaining your business opportunity for 2 hrs vs inviting in 5 mins? Hope you get the point.

  • Email Blasting

Personally, I think this is plain ridiculous. You get into a business opportunity and the first thing you do is source for emails (some even buy …argh…) and blast out messages about your ‘opportunity of a lifetime’. Cmon, gimme us a break, how many opportunities of a lifetime are we gonna get in a day?

We all get these emails. Ridiculous emails with no courtesy whatsoever. Telling you that you are a leader and that your leadership will be most rewarded by joining a ground-floor opportunity.

It doesn’t work, okay? People get spammed all the time and adding yours to the garbage is not gonna get you in a good stead.

I also see people use do these stuffs to their warm market. They send a mail blast to their warm market. Why?

Except you call them ahead of time that you are going to send them some information about something you think they might be interested in, I suggested that you don’t blast. Even explaining your business opportunity via email is a terrible idea. Don’t do it!

The best way to approach your warm market is to call them up and send them to a presentation, whether online or offline, not by sending them an email explaining the details of your business opportunity.

  • ‘Trying it out’ versus committing to making it work

If you are just starting MLM and you have the mentality that you are going to see if it will work, let me save you a lot of stress and pain, it would not. You might as well quit now.

When I qualify my prospects, one of the things I look for is to see if they are trying it out, or they are committed to making things work. If I hear statements such as ‘I hope that this works out’, ‘Tosin, I am trusting you’, ‘Do you think I should really do this?’, ‘What happens if I don’t make money the first month?’, etc, I understand that they are ‘trying things out’ instead of having a mentality that this is really going to work for them. So I stop them in their tracks and tell them ‘Listen, if you are going to succeed in this business, and (I state their goals and reasons they want to be involved in MLM), you cant just hope that things work out. You gotta make this thing work. You have to be committed to make this work. If you think I am going to build this business for you, you are not a good fit for this opportunity.’

I belong to MLSP, the largest attraction marketing system on the internet, which offers the best training for Network Marketers on the internet. When I introduce people to the system, I tell them that even though there is a 14-day trial I don’t think they will get any result in 14 days. So if they are thinking of trying it out for 14 days they might as well not signed up because the probability of getting the kind of result they are expecting is slim.

It’s ridiculous thinking of things like this. Does an entrepreneur buy a McDonald Franchise to see if it will work? No! They go into the business with the mindset of making things work.

This industry works, just that more often than not it doesn’t work as fast as we want it, especially at the onset.

You have to manage your expectations.

  • Believing the Hype

It’s pretty hard not to believe the hype. These guys are good at writing sales letters, especially on the internet as they have done intense study on psychology, influence and mind control. They are skilled at manipulating the human emotion in such a way that by the time you are entering your credit card details you are already envisioning the 5-star vacations, and the Maseratti. They are clever. It’s their job. That’s what they do for a living. Playing on the mind to get it to act fast by dangling carrots.

Here is the real deal: There is no secret other than hustling and working your butt off to make it happen. It would be much smarter to read the blogs of people you like and learn that way than buy most of the programs out there.

Now, the reality is most programs are actually pretty good but even they take time to work. You have to apply what they teach, none of them will make you rich overnight.

  • Being an MLM China Doll and Getting Discouraged too Easily

This is from my heart: Sometimes MLM does not make sense. Sometimes you work your butts off and you still don’t see much. You work hard at it and still feel like your efforts are not commensurate with your results. It could be pretty tough.

So does MLM still make sense for those struggling? Yeah, it still does and there are several reasons.

Any network marketing business opportunity is typically low risk in that you can usually join one for less than $500. Another key component is your past does not matter. You do not have to have a good credit score, school attendance, college degree, references or the lack of a prison record. You can be a top mlm leader and have had everything your entire life go wrong. Everyone starts with the same opportunity; it is the last bastion of truly free enterprise.

If you want, change your strategy. Analyze your tactics. Modify your techniques. Alter your methods. Adjust your approach. Amend your blueprint. Revise your modus operandi.

Do all you can except QUIT. Don’t ever QUIT on yourself or your DREAMS

If you put all these points to heart as you start and continue in your business, it is impossible for you not to be successful in MLM. Refusing to make these mistakes would save you from unnecessary pain and frustration.
