How to Promise Success Without Being One Yet
I am making three major assumptions while writing this post:
Number 1: You are human
Number 2: You are involved in a home-based business
Number 3: You are not successful yet or have people in your team who are not successful yet.
If that is the case, then listen up!
There is a question that must have popped up in your mind, head, whatever, at one time or the other as regards your home-based business. And it is that,
“I’m brand new! I am not yet successful, how in the world can I tell people to join me? How in the world am I supposed to have the audacity to tell them I will make them successful?”
I have asked myself this question before, all the world’s most successful home-based business owners, network marketers, internet marketers have asked themselves this question before. I get this question from time to time from my team members.
And you know what?
It is a Good Question to Ask…
It is definitely a good question to ask and don’t ever feel bad for asking this important question. Don’t allow anyone shut you down for asking this question.
I mean, what do you do when you cannot get past the feelings of being a fake when you talk to your prospects because you haven’t made it yet in your home-based business, and yet this is you telling them you can help them to get what it is they need and want.
The reason you ask this question is because you really want to help them succeed, but you are not sure you can actually do so especially since you have not made it yourself.
I know I used to have these feelings. Sometimes up to the point of giving up on my prospects who have a need and who have a strong goal in focus. Then I’d feel that if I say I can help them, but then I or they don’t succeed, I will feel like I have sold them a crock. This normally used to stop me from getting out there and making my home-based business work.
Hmmm… (((sighs)))
It all changed when I encountered…
The Realization That Changed My Thinking
Know that for you to have that kind of feeling, you really have an honest desire to help people out in your home-based business.
What you probably do not understand is that you have ACTUALLY taken up responsibility for the people you sponsor into your business. There is a difference between desiring to help people and taking responsibility for the outcome of their business.
When you sincerely look at it, we are all “fakes” before we get results. But the irony is that we must get results to have results. Weird statement, huh?
First of all, we that are involved in home based businesses are not any different than any other profession in this respect. A person can spend 10 years in college, studying to be a lawyer but is still a fake until he gets results for a client. Every carpenter must build his first house. Every beautician must cut her first ‘real’ head of hair.
Therefore don’t allow YOURSELF to stop YOURSELF in your home business efforts. Okay? If you don’t get past the feelings and start taking action, you will use your feeling to stop yourself from genuinely helping people as well as helping yourself.
A System Makes Things Easy Though…
If you have a SYSTEM and it you should to make the kill you desire in your home based business, then it is only a matter of plugging your prospects into your MASTERMIND of the 5,6,7,8 figure income earners of those in your MASTERMIND SYSTEM.
I want you to recognize that every person must go through these feelings. Thank goodness “experience” is not required for childbirth – otherwise there would be no children
you would never be alive
Believe it or not, there was a time when all the heavy hitters hadn’t sponsored a single person.
CALL TO ACTION: One of the easiest ways to get past this feeling is to get results as soon as possible, so that you now have the genuine feeling of having gotten results. Indicate your intentions HERE to begin a training to make it a reality.
Share this post with others to help them get out of these feelings that could sabotage their home based business efforts. Thanks you!

Hey Tosin,
This is probably the biggest personal problem that exists in our industry today. Although, I think a lot of people do keep it to themselves. It tends to hold them back from taking action. There may be a few “naturals” out there, but for the most part, people will need help to get past this. I recommend they take your call to action and start moving ahead with their success.

Hey Steven,
You are right, some keep it to themselves. I was not big on sharing things before so i kept it to myself though one or two of my close friends definitely could sense it.
Will it not be cool to be able to get past this and unleash what is within? I think it will be cool.
Take care Steven and have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Tosin,
What is for sure is that we have to be able to offer prospects a way to be successful and a system like the one you refer to is the ideal solution. Couple this with your active mentoring of the team member and you have a great deal to offer anybody looking to partner with you.
I am pleased you voiced this for so many and provided a great solution!

Hey Tosin,
we all go through but one thing I advice anyone coming into the business is to become a master pointer. You want to point them to the tools and trainings that you and the rest of your team uses.
This builds synergy, uniformity, and confidence for everyone. This is something you want the new team members to see that we all work together to help each other get to the same goal.
Thanks for sharing Tosin!

Hey Tosin!
Great question to ask, and one that faces every new comer to this industry.
The way I see it, as long as you are at least one step further along the path than someone else, you have something to teach them. As long as you’re going in the right direction that is.
Of course, some people want to see real results, so that’s when you have to plug them into your upline or the system you’re connected with, and the power of team and social proof comes into play.
Nice work Tosin,
All the best,

The point about knowing knowing a little about something than someone else was one of the important points I got from Magnetic Sponsoring and it helps to build confidence because you know that you have something of value to offer.
I greatly advocate getting plugged into a system to have the support of other people. It helps!

Tosin
Tosin, aloha. Well done, Tosin on a very important topic.
No matter what the industry or profession, no matter how many years of experience a person has or years of education, there is always, always, always training/instruction when a person starts at a new company. Why we expect it should be so different in the home based business industry is beyond me.
The good news is that it is not. All we have to do is avail ourselves of the systems that are in place for that very purpose and edify our team members/corporate field staff. While we may have sponsored someone, we are not the only person they can look to for help. We need to connect them with other team members so that they realize they are, in fact, a part of a team.
Edify others, plug new distributors into the system, then be the sponsor you would like to have and you will be well on your way to building a solid & lasting organization.
Best wishes for a terrific week, Tosin. Aloha. Janet
Hey Janet,
Good to see you here. Hope you like it here?
We really can no do this on our own, we need the help of others when we are starting. In fact no matter how long we have the experience, we still need people, as evidenced by the community we belong to.
We really do not need to reinvent the wheel. Plug into the system is a wonderful advice.
Thanks for a lovely comment, Janet!
Cheers!

Hey Tosin,
This post definitely highlights a major problem that most people who start out face, and also a reason I feel that most people would quit.
It is also about self-worth and how much we feel we are worth, about how much value we believe we bring to the world. Everyone has something they are good at in life, something that they are passionate about and read up on. All these things can be used as a tool to educate others when we want to educate them.
Only when you are seen as an expert will people begin to follow you, we are all experts in one way or another and it is up to us to find out what that is.
Thanks for sharing this post and I’m looking forward to the next.

Hi Tosin,
This is a question that we’ve ALL asked ourselves in the beginning. And one must first understand that these feelings are quite normal.
You’ve described the feelings so well. And your encouragement to keep moving forward is right on — absolutely correct.
A couple of things that helped me break through -
1. Ride the coattails of your sponsor or upline. If you have a successful upline, then talk to your prospects about joining your TEAM, meaning, you , your sponsor or upline and all their members. If you are learning from your upline, then you can pass that on to YOUR team members!
2. As you said, an online marketing system can be helpful to get started, particularly one that your new member can plug into and get results. It takes the heat off of you.
3. Understand that we all started at the bottom. Chances are high that you know more than your new team member, even if just a little bit more. You can teach that person as YOU grow. It’s all a process.
Thanks for the great post, Tosin. I look forward to reading more!
Dr. Bob Clarke recently posted..Part Time Networkers- Can You Compete
Hey Bob,
Yeah, we have ALL asked ourselves this question at one time or the other. I definitely believe that unless we take the leadership position of pointing this things out, alot of people starting out will continue to bottle these feelings. (Btw, your last post pointed out a common misconception, Bob)
The impact of having a very supportive upline or team can not be overstated. They help us manage the feeling and urge us on.
Everyone starts out at the bottom, but isn’t it great that we all can climb the ladder and see that if we keep at it, we can reap the rewards and move on from there.
So glad to see you here, Bob!
Cheers!

Hi Tosin,
It’s wonderful to know you through CM forum! Thanks for sharing this very candid and true post. I, for one have asked that very same question, and the points you raised are definitely helpful to everyone in the home-based industry – 1) There are definitely people who know less than what we currently know 2) In any profession, there is learning curve involved (much like the lawyer, carpenter, beautician examples you cited). 3) Lastly, a system and a team is very crucial to starting a home-based business.
I also very much agree with what Sherman said that we don’t necessarily have to be the experts, but we can be the master pointer!
And of course, a statement I live by is “We become successful before we make money, and it’s not the other way around”. This tells so much about our beliefs. And Ryan is right, we are successful the moment we set our heart and mind to a particular goal.
Thanks for sharing this, Toisin. And I’ll definitely be back here.

Great post Tosin,
I believe that you have to start with a belief in yourself and the rest will somehow just fall into place like Ryan said. It’s the darnest thing, but it sure does work. Having that faith in yourself that you will attract the right people works. Plugging them into systems, calls, uplines that are willing to help is all crucial. But making those connections are what counts.
Really enjoyed reading this one my new friend. Thanks for this.
Have a blessed day!

Hi Tosin,
You got me on all three accounts, i have my own business and striving for success. And at this point it’s hard to help or get help from people because you have no results to show them.
But what we can do is show them a good system and explain to them how and why it will work without fail. Some will pass the opportunity, but the best of them won’t.
Nice meeting you, Maria.
Maria Pavel@CNA Training recently posted..How to Verify your CNA Certification-License
Hey Maria,
Nice meeting you too.
If you have a good system and explain well to them how and why it will work without fail, you might not get all yes to your request, but you can surely do something with those who do and get results with them. Then what you just do is show those that pass the first time that you have the result
That’s the way business is. You need to get results to have results.
Thanks for the valuable contribution, Maria!

Hi Tosin,
Taking responsibility for another person’s outcome is certainly a step above desiring to help them. You made a profound point there. It all ties into delivering a lot of upfront value.
Depending on industry, it’s wiser to at least try out what you’re teaching/selling. You’ll gain a level of understanding that will set you apart from many of your competitors. Plus, you’ll have war stories to share with newbies who will soon experience what you already have.
Thanks for the read…

Often companies will hire someone with lesser experience solely because of the desire and frame-of-mind the individual portrays.
There’s a great story told (in Think and Grow Rich) of a young man who wanted to do anything in his power to become a business PARTNER of Thomas Edison. He didn’t have anything to his name, wasn’t qualified in any way, but he worked for it. He took the next freight train up to Thomas Edison, and become a somewhat “servant” boy doing errands and menial tasks. For months. It paid off. He sold one of Thomas Edison’s inventions that was deemed “unsalable” and become an immediate partner to Edison.
He wasn’t qualified – but desire made up the difference.
Christian Hollingsworth recently posted..5 Secret Steps To Make A Fortune Online
Hey Christian,
I like that story from ‘Think and Grow Rich’ and it portrays the point of desire and frame-of-mind.
However I think desire is not often enough unless it is supported by a group of people and system, especially as available in the Network Marketing Industry. This helps the individual becomes stable and helps him shorten the learning curve while learning the necessary skills to be successful.
Thanks for sharing your insights, Christian!

Hi Tosin,
Awesome article and one that is an issue for so many people starting a home based business. I know when I got started, I relied on my upline as a success story. I knew that they made it and they were helping me, and that’s what I shared with my prospects.
Also, I think that often people believe that they’ve got to be making 10K a month to call themselves successful in this business. In all honesty, many people you prospect would be grateful for that 300 paycheck, so don’t minimize the accomplishments you have made.
Great post!

You bring up an important point about the misconception about what it is to be successful. That’s right, I know people that would be grateful for the extra 300 bucks and would call themselves success with that. So each one should exhibit confidence in his or her capacity to make progress.
It’s also good that you had people who helped you when you were starting out as I am sure it is instrumental to what you have been able to achieve now.
Thanks for coming to my site, Heather! Hope to see more of you here.

Hi Tosin,
Wonderful post and very valid question. There’s constant learning involved in this industry. Not just in the beginning when we first start out, but every time we change companies as well.
What we need to do is …Learn – Apply – Teach. Which means learn the new skill, apply it in our business and then teach it to our team.
This kind of takes the feeling “like a fake” out as yes, we may not have reached out goals yet and made the money we desire, but we are getting there. And as we are, we are learning new techniques and strategies, apply them to our business, and teach it to those we sponsor in to our team so they can be successful as well.
If there’s a system in place already, great. Use it! As systems are duplicatable, people are not.
As always, great post, Tosin!
Have a nice week!

Hey Ilka,
I appreciate your comment.
The good thing is that most of us come to this industry with absolutely not much and here we are doing well most likely because we found a system as well as have people who have supported us along the way.
That is the main reason we should always have it at the back of our minds to always have the patience with those who are just coming because they have their own fair of fears and because we were once there we can offer them comfort.
Thanks for adding to the discussion, Ilka!

For this situation, I always thinks that our tips is useful somehow to other persons. Even the tips do not work for us, it may be work for others. That’s why I do not reluctant to share what I know even it is not success for me.
Hey Dana,
Like they say different strokes for different folks. Yeah, that is does not work for you does not mean it would not work for the other person. Different personalities ought to be factored in.
Thanks!

I wonder how can others can come up with realistic success stories where in fact, they haven’t earned any penny in reality. Whenever I’m encouraging others, I can’t totally tell them a success story but what I’m telling them is the proven chance for them to really excel in this field.

Over the years i’ve learned one true thing: confidence builds and attracts confidence. From this point of view, selling Success when you don’t actually have it yourself is simple: act like it’s just a matter of time before you do have it. Show people you’re not there yet, but you know you will, soon.
