The Only Professionals That Should Not Do MLM
The Only Professionals That Should Not Do MLM

I know, I know, I know. I know I should not say this but when people are misled into thinking that something is whereas it is not, then I believe that something aggressive should be done so as to remedy the situation.
I have continually said that MLM is the only profession that does not care where you are coming from. We have all seen the old and the young, the female and the male, the rich and the poor come into the MLM industry and succeed. It goes without saying that MLM is all-embracing.
This is especially important in these turbulent economic times when people are looking for more ways to generate extra income. Whether it’s to pay mortgages, car loans, the kids’ college, that important family vacation, etc, more and more professionals are flooding the MLM industry. You might want to check out www.google.com/adwords for words like Home based business opportunities, mlm, network marketing etc to understand how huge this is.
However, These Professionals Should NOT Do MLM…
This is bound to shock a lot of people, but I would care less…
The professionals that should not venture into MLM are the Professional Salesmen.
Yeah, I said it! I knew you would be surprised. I know a lot of people who would do anything to have professional salesmen on their team. And I understand why!
And if you are a professional salesman, and you are reading this, well understand that I absolutely LOVE salesmen. I once nursed a desire to get trained as a Salesperson because I am a shy person. The man who literarily made me join this awesome industry, Robert Kiyosaki, used to be a salesman and if not for anything I owe him that. I really do LOVE salesmen.
But you see, one of the things that is giving this industry a bad name is the tendency of people to act as salesmen in their mlm business. But MLM is not a sales job. MLM is a marketing business.
3 Reasons You Should Not Have the Mindset of a Sales Professional
- 99% of People Suck at Sales
No doubt about it, salesmen could recruit a lot of people using their sophisticated skillset, but after that what next? You see, 99% of people are not good in sales and so if having skills in sales is the path to success then a lot of people have failed even before they get started.
Sadly, that is what a lot of people think. I remember when I used to chase people in the good ‘ol days, one of their objections is that they cannot sell to people and that they would join if I would be selling on their behalf. (I chuckle when I remember those times).
The way out is to quit selling and start smart marketing. My income began to see a massive boost when I understood this
- Your Company Does Not Recognize You as a Salesperson
One of my mentors would say that when people call your company’s head office asking for the sales department that your phone does not ring. They don’t patch the call through simply because the company does not recognize you as the Sales department.
They recognize you as marketers who simply invite and see who is interested in the opportunity. That’s all. That’s why they invest in those training resources, so that you could invite.
- Salesmen are trained to work for money right now vs cashflow
Most salespeople have been trained to work for money right now, versus cashflow. You want to make sure you understand that a network marketing business opportunity is a long term deal. Robert Kiyosaki says those who flipped houses, sold big ticket items, rode the stock market, etc all worked for capital gains and have suffered whereas those who worked for cashflow have fared much better in this economy.
This industry is all about that all-important cashflow. Learn to embrace it.
So if your reason for not getting involved in the mlm industry is because you have condemned yourself to being terrible at sales, then GET OVER IT. You don’t have to be good at sales. You are not supposed to be good at sales.
MLM is not about chasing, bugging, begging people. It is not about being an expert at sales. This business is simply all about inviting people and seeing who wants to take their income to the next level.

Thanks Robert.
Glad you enjoy my posts
This is a great point you are making and VERY TRUE. Network Marketing is not about sales. It’s about building relationships. Thanks, Tosin, for reminding me!

You are welcome Juli
This is a wonderful piece@’Tosin Adeoti.I joined MLM business even before I knew Robert Kiyosaki has written about it simply because I think it is the only business I could do sucessfully along with my full time job but I was having doubt when I actually came across Robert”s book on Network marketing.
It was like a God’s sent to me and I knew I was in the right business. If someone as shy and reserved as Robert could actually suceed, then what am I doing?
It is another masterpiece.Well done!

Hi Mobolaji,
Robert Kiyosaki is really a great influence and it just goes how invaluable this industry is.
Thanks

Interesting point! I would have assumed that there were lots of different types of people who aren’t cut out for MLM, so I was surprised to see you come up with “professional salesperson”.
But you’re right – professional salespeople are trained to think and behave in a certain way, which isn’t really all that conducive to MLM. Not that someone with this background couldn’t overcome these weaknesses, but it would be important to be aware of up front.

Yeah, the way they are trained is not the way of the MLM’er.
But that’s not to say that they cant be reprogrammed. They surely can and that would mean that they are no longer Professional Salespeople as least as far as their approach to the business is concerned.
Thanks
Tosin
Hi Tosin,
I’m not presently involved in MLM, but I’ve tried it. Those I saw succeed were good at recruiting and supporting their network. They had people skills, not sales skills.
My Dad was a career salesman. I can imagine him selling product or even selling people on an opportunity. But like you said, nurturing his downline would not have been his strength.

Hi Bob,
Yeah, it’s not about selling. I tell people to do this well the way I teach and they would have alot of fun doing it,because basically what you are doing is inviting people.
It’s that simple.
Thanks Bob.
Thanks
This is an interesting post Tosin. Whilst I’m not in network marketing myself I believe that running a business has the same fundamental requirements.
I must admit I interpret selling differently. I’ve been told I’m a good salesperson – I’ve also been told I’m great at building relationships and that’s the way I sell. But trust me, I’m a salesperson first and my marketing approach maybe to build relationships but at the back of my mind I’m also selling:) I like to call it subtle selling:)
Lilach Bullock recently posted..Does Pop Up Domination really increase your subscribers?
Hi Lilach,
It’s interesting that you interpret it that way.
Thanks.
Tosin, I really enjoyed your post, entertaining and educative. If you’re trained as a sales person, you embrace communication skills. In MLM, building relationship is important, then it relates to communication skills. If you’ve sales skills, it will help. However, in MLM we have different approach, we’re not selling here but team building.
Viviana recently posted..Top 10 Signs You are Building Unhealthy Business
Hi Viviana,
I love these words ‘We are not selling here but team building’.
That’s the fundamental difference. Salesmen dont care about building a team but making a sale. The real networker asks, ‘How do I help the person I just recruited?’, while the Salesman asks ‘How do I make the next sale?’.
Those questions open a world of difference between the two.
Thanks for your valuable contribution
Tosin
I have to admit, I cracked up laughing when I saw this. You make great points. I love the post. Stick to building relationships and the ‘sales’ will come! This was a great read!

Hi Tosin, You said some great stuff here. It is this type of understanding that can really help a lot of people in the mlm industry do things right, specially from the get-go! So crucial to get educated as fast as possible about why we are “information providers” and not salesman trying to push a product or service down your throat. It is a people to people, personal, trust establishing business.
Great info!

Well said Tosin and how synchronistic. I just spoke with a dear friend yesterday evening who asked my opinion about her interest in an MLM. Unfortunately, she presented with the “sales” mindset and although I’m not involved with MLM, I intuitively and gracefully informed her of your unconscious “sales” approach and suggested she place her energy in building trust first. I love the candid honesty and the free training resource that you share in your post. I believe when you lead by example and show people “how” to build trust, you establish a Win/Win.

Interesting post Tosin
Everyone should go into business with the mind of creating value and helping others. Being sales y can be a big put off. If we are willing to help others, our chances of being successful in what we do is going to be high.
It’s good to know how to close the sales but the key to closing the sales is listening to the clients wants and closing them on what you’ve heard.
A sales perso should not do any business at all until they’ve changed their perspective of how they close the sales.
Thanks for sharing.
