How to Increase the Retention Rate in Your MLM Team
How to Increase the Retention Rate in Your MLM Team
It could be so frustrating when you have people come into your team and before you know it see them drop off as if they have no reason why they came into the team in the first place. What is worse than expending a great deal of time and effort on a prospect and not joining is having them join and then in a matter of weeks see them drop off.
The truth is that MLM is a business and anyone who sees it as a get-rich-quick fix to their economic problem will be very disappointed. But some people don’t see it that way. I always say that a medical student will spend years upon years and in the process spends a lot of money before they start making any money, yet most people will venture into MLM without bringing with them the mindset that this business has got its learning curve too. While I know a couple of people who have quickly gone up the rank in a relatively short period of time, it is the exception rather than the norm. Everyone will go through that all-important learning curve before they make money. The learning curve is just longer for others.
Tips on How to Increase the Retention Rate in Your MLM Team
As a caring sponsor/upline, there are certain things you can put in place to ensure that people don’t just quit on themselves early on before the results start pouring in. The following tips are on how to increase such retention rate in your mlm team.
- Believe in Yourself
There are several people complaining that they are not duplicating, but deep in their hearts they know they believe that they are not good enough. They believe that they will be doing other people disservice by making them join their team.
How can you let someone else believe in your ability to help them fulfil their dreams and aspirations without believe that you can help yourself fulfil your dreams and aspirations.
You gotta believe you can do this. You might not know everything there is to know, but as much as possible leverage the success of your uplines and people who have been in the business longer than you to spur yourself and others.
- Welcome Them to the Team
A lot of network marketers would go all out to recruit into their team and when they become a part of the team, they leave them to themselves and go ahead to get the next person. Don’t do that!
When anyone becomes a part of your MLM team, welcome them. Make them feel welcome. If possible, introduce them to your uplines and others in the team. That will create an atmosphere of togetherness and it would instill in them the feeling that they are in something truly exciting.
- Provide a Step-by-Step Process for Them
A lot of people that would be joining your team would not know how to get started building their team. Thus, you have the mandate to help them get started on the right path.
Have a step-by-step process for them to follow. Then in a couple of days have them report what they have done and what the results were. Teach them that this is what they need to do for themselves every day.
- Have Downline Specific Activities/Training
This makes them feel they are part of an exclusive club and that they are getting tons of training just for being with you. You can have a Skype group, a specified hour for a weekly Skype group chat, webinars, websites with training on it only for your downline, or whatever else you can think of.
One little tip here: you don’t have to have 200 people in your downline to do this. If you get three people to a webinar you are doing, word will spread about it. Plus, your downline can invite prospects to it and get easier sign-ups.
Remember that the whole key is to help your downline believe they will make money and then help them do it. I know, it’s pretty obvious, but how many people actually make the effort to create a team atmosphere?
I know several people in this industry who have never been called by their upline. They’ve never called them or helped them or provided training. This will help set you apart, and it will help you recruit even more, because word will spread about how great it is to be in your downline.
But you don’t want to babysit your people! There is a very fine line between helping and babysitting. Tell them that if they need help they should take the initiative to call you and not wait around for you to contact them. You can’t read their mind and they shouldn’t expect you to.
Ultimately when it comes down to increasing retention rate in your downline, it really isn’t your fault if your sign up decides to leave especially after you have tried to help them out. If someone doesn’t want to do something, then just let them go and move on. There are plenty of other fish in the sea. Never be addicted to such outcomes.

Hi Tosin,
Good tips here about how to increase the intention rate.
I have a personal experience about the team not duplicating to share. I have learned from many great leaders that we should not ‘babysit’ our team members. Yet we do have to provide them with a ‘baby step blue print’ otherwise many ordinary people (mostly are when they first join a network marketing company)will drop out because of not experiencing success early on in their career.
Leaders like Johnny Kelly, Jeffrey Combs, Dani Johnson and Tim Sales all advocate for starting FAST in order to retain team members. Who would like to leave the team when money is coming in fast?
I’d like to add that the newer network marketing companies tend to have a more attractive front-end bonus. For example, in MonaVie, there is a $40 Direct Recruit Bonus. For bigger orders, there is a $50 Bulk Order Bonus. For assisting a new distributors to get just two people as his/her team members, there is another ‘Star Maker Bonus’. All these initiatives can fast track people to stay on. By staying on and experiencing more success (and hearing more success stories), he/she would be a distributor for life!
A strong team with a lot of activities and results is a sure way to keep those serious in the business to stay on! I cannot stress enough the importance of having a mentor and a clearly designed DAILY Game Plan.

Hi Viola,
Awesome comment as usual!
I totally agree with you that no one gets discouraged when he’s making money. New members should be cared for to make that important first check as soon as possible cos it’s a great morale booster.
The concept adopted by the newer companies favours this like you rightly confirmed.
You know, it all boils down to seeing your team members as those that you should give a blueprint and help succeed as soon as you can.
Thanks for your contribution.

I believe that your success lies in the followup. Statistics show that only 5% of unsatisfied customers will take their complaint directly to the company; most just take their business elsewhere. Simply checking in on your team periodically makes it easier for them to ask questions or get clarification or share their frustrations with you. This gives YOU the opportunity to provide the support your team needs to be successful.
Hi Lesa,
You’re right. Occasionally seeing to it that they are motivated and taking action is important though as your team grows it becomes difficult to call on everybody.
That is why you need to provide an environment where your team members can call on you when they need your help.
Having a community where there’s free flow of info is a great thing to do as well.
Thanks
Tosin
Giving your team support is a great way to retain them, but it’s also important to train them to pass that support down the line or as soon as your team gets too large you’ll be getting stretched out pretty thin.

That’s very correct Warren. You should make all that you duplicate cos that’s where the real money is made.

Excellent post, Tosin. Though I’m not into MLM (not yet anyway), the principles of success when it comes to working with people are the same: do not treat your downline like cattle, treat them like PEOPLE. They are not your stepping stones to success; they’re an integral part of your success. Your success depends on THEIR success. Towards this, treating them as relationships and nurturing them is the way to go. Cheers!

Hi Tosin,
People get easily disappointed if they don’t see fast results so what they really need is encouragement in order to start believing on their self and stand on their own powers…

Hi Kostas,
What you say is true. Belief is key!
As long as people can have that all-important belief, they are on the right part. Nothing is more detrimental to success that self-doubt.

I loved how you compared MLM to medical studies, and you are correct, most people don’t see it that way, but rather a “get rich quick with no work from your part”. Some of the blame can be to overly eager reps who simply want another signup.
I was like this in the beginning
Today I’d rather don’t sponsor people that do not want to do the hard work, because these people are a waste of my time.
Excellent post, and very good tips.

Hi Hezi,
We all have been there when all we wanted was to have anyone anyhow in our team even when they are coming with the mindset that they dont need to work hard.
Now we both know better that the key to success is hardwork.
Thanks

Whilst I’m not in MLM these are good steps to retain your clients in business. It’s so much easier retaining clients/sponsors rather than having to continually regurgitate the wheel and find new prospects.

You got it, Lilach. Retaining clients is definitely easier than getting new ones.
It is especially important in MLM where the dream is residual income and no residual income comes without team work.

Hi Tosin,
Those are great points! It’s very important for new members to feel a part of the team. It’s a lot more likely that they will have success and stick around. Who wants to join an team and then feel abandoned? If we abandon them they are likely to abandon us!

Hi Stacy,
I like this ‘If we abandon them they are likely to abandon us!’. So true!
And that is the more reason for there to be a blueprint in place for people just coming into the business.
Thanks

Hi Tosin, I’ve missed seeing you lately. I am sorry I have not seen you for a while. I have been on the road this last day or two down in the States… the WIFI has been IFFY so I have not been online as often as I like.
In any event, I really enjoyed your post. I am not in MLM currently, but I am in direct sales amongst my own personal business services.
Many years ago I built a training site to show my ‘partners’ (so to speak) how to get their businesses up and running. This along with regular ‘meetings’ (online of course).
I have joined people many years ago who I’d sign up with and was left high and dry with no direction whatsoever. I swore I’d never do that so had to go out and learn on my own.
What do you do to help your partners get a good start??
Best

Hi Jayne,
No worries as long as you are having a great time
I didnt know you are no longer involved in MLM, maybe it’s time to pitch you mine…lol (just kidding)
It’s great when I see people like you who have been at the receiving of sponsors who dont care come out to say that you’d never let your team members experience the same. Very heart-warming!
What I do? As soon as they join my team, I give them a call and welcome them to the team. I’d let them know that I’m gonna be shooting them a welcome email that would contain what they should do first.
In the email is a link to the team website where there are a huge list of resources for the A2W Dream Team member like we call ourselves. We got Videos, Audios, Articles, Webinar recordings, podcasts etc. They are grouped into steps and I tell them to Do Step 1-4 and get back to me when they are done.
It is a step-by-step process that anyone can do. Very effective!
Always glad to see you here, Jayne! Have a great week ahead
Tosin
Experience has taught me that communication is KEY. since I decided to contact my team once or twice a week, the result has been wonderful. the influence has grown even though I might not be physically present. I get messages/reply from those I don’t even know and renewal has been encouraging.
Good note Tosin (make I be like you oooo.lol)!!!
Yeah man! Communication is Key. I mean just knowing that someone got your back is a big motivation on its own.
No worries! Get back from Turkey and let’s plan something only if you bring something from there though
Cheers Tayo

Hey Tosin,
So many people get into MLM’s for the wrong reasons. They do think that they will “get rich quick” and it is, in part, the fault of many of the scammy MLM’ers out there. Telling people that they can be making $10,000/month in their first month. Which may happen occasionally, but not very often.
I think having a proven system in place for new members is one of the most important things you can do with your MLM and also keeping in contact with them on a weekly basis is also very important. Just to show them that you do care about them and that they are not alone in this.
Thanks for sharing Tosin.

Absolutely Ian!
It’s so misleading to tell newbies that they can be making that kind of amount in their first month.
If you have a system in place for your team it pays great dividends.
Thanks
