Daily Mode of Operation: What Does a DMO Entail?
A Daily Mode of Operation is a must for anyone who is serious about building a home-based business. In this post I’d be telling you not just what a Daily Mode of Operation means, what it entails, but also how to go about setting up one that would work excellently for you.
The truth is that things can really get very overwhelming on the web. I mean you get to your laptop to do some work and you see a very lovely link (it usually starts from facebook), you click on it and on and on you go on to another link till you see that you have not accomplished a lot of the things you set out to do online.
What is even more pathetic is that we claim there is not much time to do all of the things we want to do, yet the time we have is spent at unproductive activities which eventually make a lot of people feel guilty.

In that post, I talked about how it is vital to be able to schedule your money in advance on the things that are most important in your business. I talked about the need to determine EVERY ounce of income you have to devote to your business RIGHT now.
Equally important, maybe even more important, is budgeting your time, in terms of having a Daily Mode of Operation, in your business dealings.
Why You Need A Daily Mode of Operation
Without a Daily Mode of Operation, you WILL end up making a mess of your business efforts.
I was having a conversation with someone who is seemingly frustrated online. She asked me if common people really make money from a home-based business or it’s only the gurus that keep milking the poor guys.
She told of how she had bought so many books and CDs and how she hadn’t even had the time to read, listen and watch a truckload of them.

If you have a lot of products that you have not used, you do not need a soothsayer to tell you that you are buying too much and that you should just stop buying and start using what you have.
For instance, what’s the purpose of a doctor buying medical instruments that he doesn’t use? That wouldn’t make sense to him, and it shouldn’t to you too.
Something I see lacking in many people just starting in the Home-based business circles is the lack of determination to get started and maintain a Daily Mode of Operation, where every one of their activities is hinged.
For instance, I know that I cannot be online for 24hrs. It’s not even recommended health-wise. I have a series of activities that I have jotted down somewhere in my pad (Yes, I still love the old-school pen and paper). They are activities I engage in on a daily basis. I do them every day. I train myself to stay consistent in doing them. Is it easy to stay consistent with them? No. But like I tell some of my friends, I’d rather do this now that I can and reap the rewards thereafter than leave my business to chance.
Then if while in the course of the day, I come across something I need to implement online, I make sure I pen it down and add it to my list for that particular day.
I know people who use Google calendar, and it works very well. You might want to try it out.
Key Points to Help Kickstart Your Daily Mode of Operation
1) The first thing is actually making out time to have a Daily Mode of Operation and commit to having one in the first place. How you will do this depends on how important your business is to you and what it is you are looking to achieve in your business.
2) Like Jim Rohn said, work more on yourself than on your business. That means you should constantly commit to personal development and continual appraisal of why you are doing what you are doing. For me, it has to do with watching my Mind Movie at the start of the day and reading or continue reading a personal development book. I am currently reading ‘The Secret of the Millionaire Mind’ by Harv Eker. Lovely book!
3) If you are in Network Marketing like I am, you must get in touch with people as regards your business. Talk to people about your business using the principles of attraction marketing on facebook, Skype,etc. Or call your optin leads and build a relationship with them. What to say to them I wrote about in this post: Phone Prospecting Script
4) Produce at least one content daily, be it Facebook Note, Blog Post, Press Release, Article, Hubpage, Video, Slide Share, starting a forum thread in a place like BetterNetworker etc
5) A good advice will be for you to plan ahead the day before so you can give your brain work to do in the course of your sleep.
6) Don’t beat yourself up if you fail to keep up with your daily mode of operation. Learn to be flexible. What is not so great is you going an entire week without sticking to your schedule. Occasional lapses here and there is not the end of the world. For instance I have had days when there just was no internet access, days when my laptop suddenly malfunctioned. What do you do when something like that happens? So don’t beat yourself up. Okay?
7) Continually review your Daily Mode of Operation and make necessary adjustments to suit your circumstances and objectives. Remember you are not in competition with any one. Your goal should be to stick to your Daily Mode of Operation as consistently as possible.
Did you notice I did not advice you to go around tweeting a ton of tweets, or mention checking your email, or hanging out on facebook all day and commenting on all status updates you see on your home page? Spend your time on income-producing activities and I tell you result is a great motivator.

Hi Tosin! Great post. I have a daily mode of operation in my business and still, sometimes, feel like there isn’t enough time. So I know how very important it is to schedule your time, planning it in advance, and then, stick to the schedule.
When I do it, work goes well, I finish at a reasonable hour and feel good about what I have accomplished.
When I get sucked into following a tweeted trail of links or get sucked into Facebook, or even just reading email, I get off track!

Yeah scheduling time is vital. Like they say time is money and if you can effectively plan your time, you will get much more accomplished.
I know that sometimes I dont complete my DMO 100% all the time, but it sure beats not having one for sure.

Tosin, aloha. While I have not heard the phrase DMO, I definitely have one and will be borrowing your phrase when discussing the importance of having one with others.
Tosin, I always plan the next day the night before. That way I get a better night’s sleep because I am not thinking “I have to remember to do that tomorrow” and also ideas come to me during the night on what I have written down. Finally, I can start the day knowing what I am going to do rather than trying to remember what I want to do. It makes for a much more productive day.
#6 is important to note because there are times “live happens” and your schedule will be messed up. Recognize it and get back on track. Beating yourself up serves no purpose whatsoever.

You can say ideas come to you in the night again. I get it all the time. When I plan my day ahead, I get such clarity of mind that I have found myself actually waking up in the middle of the night and jot down an idea that pops up, (maybe that’s why I love the old-school pen and paper very much).
Life happens. For instance on sunday there was power outage and I could literarily do nothing online. I dont kick myself because of that. Life happens and we should not allow that affect us.

I work lightly for 50 minutes and take a 10 minute break each hour. Keeps me focused and light, 2 qualities of all successful people.
I practice visualizing my goals during the 10 minute breaks. This energizes me, and aligns me with goal-achieving activities, stuff that makes my goals, realities.
You and Jim Rohn are so right. Many mistakenly confuse work with goal-achieving activities. You can be doing some all day long, but unless you take frequent breaks to watch your feelings and see if these acts are goal-achieving, you spin your wheels.
Take that one from someone who spun their wheels for a long time

You’re absolutely right! Facebook is the number 1 culprit in procrastination. No matter how much I blame Facebook for all my procrastination, I still can’t leave it. Thought I minimize the time I’m spending on it, still a daily mode of operation could help further.

This is one of my most favorite topics. Being organized in a consistent manner everyday is excellent for both the success of your business and your health. I am pretty much organized, I can say. Maintaining to-do lists, having equal proportions of all blog related activities while having fun and time for my family too – and I am NOT a full time blogger.
I strongly support your idea #4. If you don’t produce some form of content everyday, you lose touch with content creation. It can be a plague.

This is a subject near and dear to my heart, Tosin.
Being a part time Marketer with a full time job, having a DMO and sticking to it is one of the keys to success. I start with a family meeting each week, where we talk about what’s going on, who has an event we need to attend, who needs to be driven where, etc.
Then I block out time for my business. I like to have at least 2 hours each night, except Saturday. Saturday is our date night!
When I prepare my schedule, there are things that are the same for each day — when I read emails, when I do social media, when I reply to comments on my blog, etc. This is all part of my DMO.
The other things on my schedule varies by the day. I use Google Spreadsheets to organize it and put in colors to make it easier to decipher.

Using the DMO concept works like a dream if you keep to it! The secret to keeping to it is making it manageable so that you can achieve it most days.

Hi there! I can tell you, your article is just great! Very informative and interesting. I could say, I am a very lazy type of person. I don’t have motivation to myself. I have a lot of things I wanted to do, I’ve lots of plans. But I just can’t try it because when that day comes, I feel lazy at all. Absolutely loved this post, Tosin! I have a Daily Mode of Operation, but it totally went haywire when I picked up a new, temporary client last week and took a day-trip to Lima this past Monday! I feel like I’ve been catching up since forever. =P
Since the Skype connection is very poor from the Andes, I find that Twitter/emails/Facebook are helping me build relationships with my network. I spend a lot of time on them, but it seems to help me keep my face out there and memorable. I try not to *waste* time on these social media in the sense that I usually spend my time responding to all the messages I receive.
I absolutely love the idea of producing some sort of content daily and planning the day before. Some of my best ideas come to me just before I sleep and percolate during all those productive sleep waves. =)

It’s not easy to make yourself work sometimes, but if you don’t have a work time, you won’t have a play time, either. I used to tell my wife that you have to schedule some time for rest, too. Why do the Top Producers in your organization have such large teams? They have the same Comp plan, product and opportunity yet they seem to be knocking the cover off the ball while you’re still treading water. What’s the difference? It’s YOU!
What do you have to offer that the other million plus people in your organization don’t offer? Have you proven yourself to be a leader? If not, why would someone want to join your team? Do you have a repeatable system in place for your team to plug in to that will produce leads and results? If not, why would someone want to join your team? Have you grown as a person and developed the skills and traits that make you a winner in Life? If not, why would someone want to join your team?
These are just a few simple questions you should be asking yourself. Don’t stop there however. Now that you’ve answered some of these questions the REALLY important step is to ACT. Getting ready to get ready has gotten a whole lot of people nowhere. If your afraid to take the shot, you’ll never win.
Leadership: Some leaders are born, most are developed. Here’s a good litmus test. If you know more about your favorite T.V. show, sports team, Reality Star, etc than you do about your own business opportunity and/or your own personal development, go get a job! If your DVD collection is bigger than your book collection something is out of alignment. Please keep in mind I’m talking about those who want to be TRUE leaders.
Systems: In Network Marketing it is very important to be able to teach your team how to duplicate your success. Remember, the majority of your income relies on the success of your team. If you simply recruit someone and leave them to figure it out on there own, your asking for failure. So, do you have a system in place that is producing results for you? If so, you need to share it with your ENTIRE team.
Remember, nobody cares about Your Network Marketing Business, Company, Product or Opportunity until they are first impressed with you! So go out and work on your Leadership and get some Systems in place for your entire team to be successful.

The truth of the matter is the fear of acting keeps a lot of people back from achieving their desired success in this industry. You can have all the tools needed and still be nowhere. You can amass all the strategies and still be at a point.
So what’s the trick? Action Mike. Action. Those that are seen as winners have committed themselves to actively following a daily routine that some have come to see them as a storehouse of knowledge, but that’s not true. They are no storehouse of knowledge. They just know and take action on what they know. They commit to themselves and constantly personally develop themselves.
I promise you Mike. Let anybody consistently make a small leap and just write quotes and distribute them consistently for 90 days, he will be known. He will be seen as someone to pay attention to. He would be seen as the inspirational guy.
Now tell me Mike. What’s difficult in that? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. But people have a hard time with commitment.
Plug yourself to a system that you can plug others into, commit to the system and watch people flock to you. It’s no rocket-science. BUt people are just the way they are.

Trying to figure out how to fit everything in (12hr work days Respiratory Therapist, 3 kids, and other family duties). NO EXCUSES by any means just need alittle help on where to start.
