Blog Mobile Optimization: How to Optimize Your Blog for Mobile Visitors
Are you aware that in 2010, over 500 million people accessed the internet using their mobile phones? And that more than half of that figure had visited the web before the ending of May this year? So why have you not optimized your blog for mobile viewing? Why have you not optimized your site for your mobile visitors?
Just today I was trying to view the blogs of my friends online and I found out that out of all the ten sites I visited, just one of them had optimized his blog for mobile viewership. Incidentally he was the one I asked about one of the plugins last year.
When you see big players like Google and Microsoft spending huge amount of money on the mobile web, you should know that something is up. I am continually amazed at the r&d facebook does on its mobile web and it goes to show that there is something those who are not optimizing their sites for mobile viewing are missing.
Reasons You Should Optimize Your Blog for Mobile Viewing
- Explosion of Mobile Internet: If you don’t know that there is a surge in the use of Smartphones, tablets, mobile video devices and other hand-held devices, then we need to hire a team of experts to pull you out of the age you are in and usher you into this age and time. lol Make no mistake about it, according to a recent research, by 2014 the number of mobile users is likely to surpass the number of desktop users. Now you know where you stand, huh?
So I say to you, stop losing traffic!
- Ease of Access: This is the age of speed. People are busy, most times busy doing nothing and are living such a fast life. People are constantly on the move and they want to get things on the spot. Be it when they are in buses, train, cars, planes etc, they want to be able to access the valuable info you have displayed on your site. Therefore if you are not providing them an on-the-spot access to your sites, you are leaving a lot of traffic on the table, and losing sales in the process.
- Ease of Viral Marketing: The social media giants, facebook and twitter, have seen the vast increase in the mobile population and are taking advantage of it. For instance more than 75% of mobile users find their way to the mobile networks. More than a third of those having a facebook account make use of facebook mobile.
Therefore if you want to make your contents easier and faster to share, it is compulsory that you have a mobile-optimized site. This makes it more likely to be shared. And like I said in my last post, How to Generate Tremendous Traffic from Facebook, more shares would help your chances in the search engines.
- SEO opportunities: A couple days before writing my post on How to Get to the First Page of Google fast, I discovered that I was the second result on the first page of Google for a particular post, but when I got to my laptop I found out that it was 8th on the first page. Left me wondering and I thought it was just Google’s instability. However I have since learnt that many search engines now have different rankings for desktop search results and mobile search results. Mobile sites garner a separate set of links, because they provide additional layers of targeted, useful content.
Don’t worry if you don’t understand that.
All you need to know at this point is that having an effective mobile site improves your ranking across all results.
Plugins to Use for Blog Mobile Optimization
One of the reasons I absolutely love wordpress is because of the array of plugins it offers. Below is a list of plugins that would be sure to help in optimizing your blog for mobile viewing. Feel free to choose one of them and join our world.
- WPtouch: Nice plugin! If you use a iphone, ipod, or android, you would find it useful because it seems it was made for them.
- WordPress Mobile Edition: This is a cool plugin too. It has the additional feature of allowing you access to enter the user agents to display or not display the mobile version to.
- MobilePress: Somehow I think this plugin is the best for now. Of course I may be wrong cos I’m no techie geek. This plugin does not just show if you are using a mobile phone, but what kind of phone you are using and can thus display your blog accordingly. So if you are using an iphone and a blackberry, and you use both to access my site, you can be shown different version of my site as a result of their different capabilities. I love that feature.
That’s it folks! Optimizing your site for mobile viewing comes with some awesome advantage and it’s my hope that the next time I visit your site using my phone, I would be happy to navigate faster and easier, and it would look good to my eyes, because you have optimized it.

Hi Tosin,
Big, big-time advantages to optimizing your blog for mobile visitors.
A team member brought this to my attention. I still have some tweaking to do but know at least some mobile users can check out RBs Keys on their app of choice.
Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Tosin for sharing, before now I was using WP Mobile Edition but I think I’ll try out Mobilepress.

Hey Agbata,
Good to see you here. I love WP Mobile but I think MobilePress trumps it. See it for yourself
Yeah, eventhough I think alot of leaders and mentors of mine have jacked up the reputation of the industry, I intend to make it more respectable, especially in Africa and so far so good.
Cheers!

Hi Tosin,
I was so excited to see the topic of this post, because it’s something I’ve been wondering about for quite some time. I became curious because, like you I had a lot of difficulties visualizing web sites from my iPhone. I knew there must be plugins to help.
And then I read your post, and there they are. I am going to try the one you most highly recommended right away. One question though — do you know if any of these plugins will cause my blog to load slower on laptops or desktops. I’ve had issues with loading time before and finally have it to where I am satisfied.
Thanks, Tosin.. as always, very useful information!
Hey Bob,
I viewed your site via my mobile and found out it’s not been optimized. So I’m glad you found this useful.
I have tested the last two of the plugins and there is no problem as regards slowing down the loading time. But of course you can always find that out for yourself.
Cheers!
~Tosin
HI Tosin, first of all, I would like to thank you for bringing this up. I had never even considered that searches may be different between desktop and mobile browsing.
I actually have the same question as Dr. Bob, I just don’t want my site to be any slower and I’m actually working at getting rid of plugins.. ha ha – rather than adding. Do you know if these would make any difference?
Thanks
Jayne
Hey Jayne,
Nice to see you here again!
Yeah, searches are different. Found out accidentally.
Like I told Bob, I have tested the last two plugins and they give no sign of slowing down the loading time of sites.
LOoking forward to seeing your site optimized for my mobile.
Cheers!
~Tosin
Hi Tosin,
Thanks for this very informative article! You know this has been bouncing around in the back of my head (and floating around on the bottom of my “to do” list) for sometime but I kept putting it off because I didn’t really know what I needed to do. This is great information and gives me a place to start – thanks again!
Hello Marty,
Glad it was useful to you. Hope to come visit your site soon on my mobile.
Cheers!
~Tosin
Great info you have here. I now know something that I had not considered. I will use one of the plugins Mobilepress and see how it will work out.
Yeah Fiona, try it out and let me know what you think.
Cheers!

Very, useful post Tosin – I must be honest, I have done nothing about optimizing my blog for mobile users, but I will now. Thanks for the insight!
Always glad to be of help to you Nicky.
Hope to come visit your site soon on my mobile.

Important stuff Tosin.
I’ve been overlooking this for far too long. It came to my attention recently that a visitor to my blog who was based in Africa (I forget where) was only able to access the internet via his mobile. I’m sure he’s not the only one.
Even apart form that demographic, there’s so many people who use their phone to browse the web it’s not worth ignoring.
Nice to have a few clear and concise tips to get started on making my blog Mobile friendly… Cheers!
Hey Jym,
I came visiting your site too on my mobile and saw it was not optimized. So I am glad it’s gonna be rectified.
There is just too much potential not to optimize mobile.
Appreciate the comment, Jon!

Useful information, Tosin. Actually I’ve been thinking of making all my blogs & sites mobile friendly and recently even got few request for Blokube mobile version.
Thanks for sharing this great post, Tosin.
~Dev
Hey Dev,
I would love to have blokube have mobile. Would love it, Dev!
Thanks!
Hi Tosin,
thanks for sharing this. I couldn’t agree more with you that’s why I haved used the WPtouch plugin since the beginning of this year – so my blog has a mobile theme.
Take care
Oliver
Thanks Oliver!
Would be sure to come visit your site on my mobile.
Cheers!
~Tosin
Yes – mobile is the way to go. WPtouch is pretty good – it’s what I use. Works well now that W3 Super Cache has been set up to help it work better too. WPtouch looks OK on BlackBerry too – and is loading pretty fast, which is good.
Most of my mobile visitors come via iPad – but they only made up 3% of my blog audience over the last 30 days. Still, this will grow.
Start experimenting now – and you’ll be ready when the mobile market explodes.
Good post.
Best,
Alex
Hey Alex,
Guess I wrote this based on my discovery when I was still using it. Glad they have upgraded it. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
Dont worry, your mobile visitors will grow. Definitely!
Thanks for the visit, Alex!

Hello Tosin.
I have WPTouch but I’m not sure it’s working properly. Perhaps there’s some settings I have to do.?
Hey Ivin,
Did you go through the installation video tutorials? I learnt it’s even better than I thought at the moment. Check the tutorials out and let me know how it goes.
Cheers!
~Tosin
Hi Tosin,
I mus admit to being way behind in this type of technology. I’m not sure what an Iphone or a Smartphone actually is.
I better get caught up. I understand there’s something called a QR code that can be attached to a video, playable on a Smartphone with the appropriate app. The things you can do with modern technology!
Lou
Hey Lou,
That’s serious.lol Really the things with modern technology is amazing.
Good you are learning these things. They could make a difference, like you are learning.
Cheers!
