Beware of the MLM disconnect
I was having a conversation the other day and the question of what I do came up. When I mentioned Network Marketing (or MLM), there was an inappropriate look on this guy’s face that betrayed his ignorance. I guess he’s got a preconceived notion about the industry.
Thereafter I could not help thinking of all the people who are so anti-network marketing. They have an attitude against the whole industry. But for most of them they don’t have a clue about what the industry is all about.
Network marketing offers anybody a chance. It doesn’t matter what your background was like – whether you were born on the “other side” of the tracks, or were born with a silver spoon in your mouth. Everybody has the same opportunity – the same chance to succeed or fail.
One of the major reasons that make a lot of people quit or fail in this industry is their inability to keep in FOCUS their reason WHY they joined their Network Marketing business in the first place.
The reasons that people join MLM include:
- Freedom from a job they hate
- Wanting financial security, because their job isn’t providing this
- Desiring to live life to the fullest – and have the funds to do so
- Spend more time with their kids, spouse, parents, etc.
- Get out of the financial straits and debt that is drowning them
- Satisfaction of calling their own shots, and being a winner
- Getting duly recognized for their labour at helping other people succeed
- Wanting to look themselves in the mirror and smile, knowing they proved them all wrong.
What is the reason you joined MLM in the first place? Why have you decided to use MLM as a ticket to achieve your goals in life?
One of the reasons people quit their MLM business is because there is a disconnect between what they really want from the business (why they joined in the first place) and the daily work involved that is required to build a successful business. You will be very inspired and be more motivated to excel in your business if you remind yourself every day why you initially made the decision to become involved.
What is your motivation? What kind of dreams will your business make possible? Whose lives will you be impacting and contributing to with your success? What is the vision you carry with you? How will your network marketing, MLM, business impact your very life? What big plans are you seeking to accomplish?
To keep reminding yourself of these dreams, and staying connected with them takes commitment. Doing the daily activities to see your dreams become a reality takes commitment also. You will build habits that will make the difference between being just a dreamer or wishful thinker – and someone whose dreams come true because you take consistent and deliberate action.
How long do you keep on “keeping on”? There is a sad truth that has shown consistently how many people quit right before they would have won. In other words, they do all this work, and success is right around the corner. But discouragement creeps in and they quit.
And make sure you have a good system you are tapped into, like Marketing Survival Skills, that gives you incredible trainings to make you succeed. Without a good system to show you how you can generate leads every day that WANT your kind of business – you probably won’t last more than 2 months in network marketing.

Remembering our “why” is what it is all about. Not realizing what it’ll take to succeed and not maintaining out focus…important reminders for all of us!

Very well said.
Most people have a preconceived notion of what network marketing is yet, must haven’t taken the time to get educated on the TRUTH about mlm. Eveybody knows that we must go to school to get a good job and retire so everyone changes those of us who look at the other side of the coin.
but the truth is the truth and there is nothing any argument can do about it. Most people do network marketing EVERYDAY, but they just don’t get pay for it.

Hi Tosin,
thanks for an inspiring read. I like the word picture “MLM disconnect” even though it’s not desirable. My motivation is that I want to prove it to myself that I can do it, that I can live the life of my dreams and over-come my fears and self-doubt.
I don’t talk to people who don’t know that they don’t know, that means those you are talking about, those with the preconceived notion about MLM.
Take care

Hey Tosin,
Your suggestion about reminding yourself your “Why” everyday actually works. I remind myself constantly and add some other reasons from time to time why I got involved in this industry.
Those that have this preconceived negative image of network marketing should be ignored. In fact I don’t share my dreams with anyone that has that mentality. It’s just not going to help you any.
Thanks for sharing this insight!

Hey Tosin,
I know the look you just described. lol
You’re right, there are multiple reasons for joining, and network marketing is a wonderful alternative to working your life away for someone else. When done right.
Your post reminds me of this video I saw last week. It had me laughing till my face hurt. It was on this very topic.

Hi Tosin,
Your blog gets better all the time my friend!
One’s “WHY” is very important but interestingly enough one’s “WHY NOT TOs” also play a role which is what I discuss in my latest post. I think you’ll find it an interesting addition to what you have put forward here so well Tosin.
I agree with you that using the right kind of marketing system can be the difference between success and failure too.

Hi Tosin,
You were talking about me in the first part of your article. I don’t think I could have been any more negative about this industry. I was so sure MLM/Network Marketing was illegal that I told my husband, “if you ever get involved in one of those things again I am leaving you.” And I was dead serious.
It was the ignorance speaking. I had no clue what this industry was all about. And look what happened to me once I dug in and did my homework. Now I am a firm believer of ….”there is no other business model on the face of this earth where an ordinary person can achieve extraordinary results.”
It’s called NetWORK Marketing for a reason. If you work hard, believe in yourself and never learn how to quit you will eventually achieve success.
