7 Modern Day Lies That Will Kill Your MLM Business Fast
7 Modern Day Lies That Will Kill Your MLM Business Fast

Take it or leave it, it is an exciting time to be involved in MLM. It is not only because MLM has changed as it were, but because the various ways of approaching MLM has changed dramatically over the years. While the fundamentals have remained, such as building relationships, the methods and strategies of building the business has evolved for those doing it the right way. I mean, who would ever think that 2 years ago I would have people calling me from places like Australia, UK, etc giving me reasons why I should let them join my MLM team. Do it the right way and this business could be a lot of fun.
But alas, the modern way of doing MLM comes with its pitfalls. Not that these pitfalls did not exist from the start, but overtime it has grown in staggering proportions and more and more people are feeling the effects like never before.
It breaks my heart to realize that despite the tremendous opportunities this industry provides people are still being lied to.
I had a guy call me from Ghana the other day to confirm some stuffs about my company and I could not believe the lies that were told this fine gentleman. The man was also evidently surprised that I didn’t sugarcoat it so that he’d join me. Why would I? This industry is already the Shortcut. Anyone looking for that ‘shortcut’ in this shortcut would be cut short in his/her MLM career. (Hmmm…I like that rhyme
)
One of the major reasons most people dislike getting involved in MLM is because they were lied to when they first had an encounter with this awesome industry. And I would not blame them, like them I am not quick to place my trust or even give a listening ear to anyone who arm-twists me. I mean, when people are being lied to, they have certain false expectations and when these false expectations are not met, they are not the happiest people on earth. They get upset and label the industry ‘scam’. They leave the industry and carry the ‘gospel’ to everyone they know.
These lies are avoidable and if you are serious about taking your MLM business to the next level, then it is crucial that you guard yourself against them.
7 Modern Day Lies That Will Kill Your MLM Business Fast
If you are thinking of MLM, don’t let anyone sell these lies to you. If you are in MLM, please desist from using them as recruiting tactics because though it might work in the short-term, it is guarantee for failure in the long-term.
Lie Number 1 – It’s Easy
Because of the instant gratification era we are in, people are lured with this lie. They take it that they can put very little time and effort and reap greatly. So they don’t take it serious. How sad!
Well, MLM is not easy. But tell you what, there are a lot of things that are easy that you could do instead. What is EASY is staying in a job you hate and keeping your life comfortable, even if it is a comfortable misery. What is EASY is knowing that you need an additional source of income but watching the Sports Channel every night nonetheless. What is EASY is hanging out with the same set of friends even though you realize that your income is the average of top 5 buddies you hang out with. What is EASY is knowing that your mortgage, car loan, kids college tuition is coming up, but praying for a miracle to happen at the 11th hour. That’s easy.
But getting off your butts and doing something to make your finances better, looking inside of yourself to see where you can become better, ditching that Champions league game to prospect and calling people whom you used to discuss MLM as being a SCAM with before you knew any better is not EASY.
Lie Number 2 – John Doe Made $100,000 his first week. You can too!
Can this happen? Absolutely! But they will never tell how it happened. As far as MLM is concerned, the only way this may happen is if you bring a troop of people from a previous company to a new company the first week. And it seldom happens.
More often than not, it does not happen but they will try to lure you in with that lie.
Never take anyone serious who claims he or someone else makes a ridiculous amount of people in a short period of time. MLM is a long term business. If you attempt to get rich quick in MLM, you will get broke fast.
Plug away at something that would produce a residual income like MLM, and in 12-36 months you could be on your way to financial freedom. But it won’t happen in the first week. Okay?
Lie Number 3 – You Can Build Multiple Companies at the Same Time
Every couple of days I get someone see my leadership qualities and offer me an ‘opportunity of a lifetime’ in a company saying that my building a new business will not affect my current business. Sorry sir, it’s a lie!
Asking yourself certain questions is enough to look through this lie. A lot of people lack the discipline to successfully build one company. What then are the chances that a new undertaking would be a piece of cake?
Even if you are successful in one company, is that enough to take on a new company? Is MLM all about you? Have you consider the effect it would have on your followers/downline?
Lie Number 4 – Our MLM System Would Not Let You Talk to Friends and Family Ever Again
Oh my…I fell prey to this one. In this age of the internet, this is the most popular. I was poorly trained and so I burned out my warm marketing using some terrible offline tactics that got me spending more and more and not making a single cent.
So I jumped at the promise that there is a magical, mystical mlm system out there that could help me close prospects in droves on autopilot. I soon found out that it doesn’t work. I have since learnt how to properly approach my warm market to ensure zero rejection.
It is when you don’t believe in what you are doing combined with the fact that you are poorly trained that you should NOT approach your warm market.
Ask yourself, ‘who are the top 10 people I’d love to have a cruise with?’ Are there people in your warm market who fall into that category? Then the quickest way to earn money in MLM is to approach them the right way.
Most people come online because they are terrible at talking with people. You can’t escape this skill to be successful in business. If you are terrible at talking to people, you don’t need an mlm system, what you need is to get better and get trained properly.
Lie Number 5 – The Product Doesn’t Matter
For the sake of clarity, there are two products in any MLM business, and they both matter. You are the number one product. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will.
The product your company carries is the second product and eventually, it does matter. If your product is crap, it will eventually stop selling.
I see people say crap like your company’s product don’t matter. For starters, I don’t get behind something I don’t personally believe in and that’s integrity, my friend. You must love your product and be happy to use it personally even if there is no compensation plan attached to it.
Lie Number 6 – The Compensation Plan Doesn’t Matter
Let’s try this together … if you were searching for a job, would one that paid you more interest you more or less or does that even matter? LOL, you bet your butt it matters!
One of my mentors would talk of his first network marketing business opportunity has being a juice binary company. He was placed on an inside leg and had to build both legs. He had 9, yes, 9, 6 figure earners in his team that he brought in…unfortunately, they were all on one leg! If you know a binary, you just cringed. It means that he did not make squat off those 6 figure earners.
Let me ask you this, if you bring someone into a company, and they help make that company profitable…should you get paid? Of course you should but old school binary companies only pay you off your weaker leg. This makes the company, not the rep, very profitable. I am shocked to find old school binary companies still exist. A binary can be very lucrative but the old school way of ONLY paying you off your weaker leg is pretty tough to swallow in today’s day and age.

Hi Tosin,
The 7th lie would be “You can make it big, doing it part-time”.
It’s like saying to people that they can go pro in any sport just playing on sundays for a couple of hours with their neighbors.
To really make it you need to put some serious effort and commitment.
Work part-time and expect a lot less results.
Edwin Arenas – Multinivel en Internet recently posted..52 Tareas Para Llevar mi Negocio Multinivel a Internet: #5 Crear Enlaces de Afiliados Que Tú Controles
Hi Edwin,
I love that analogy of sports. You cant go pro playing on Sundays.
But Edwin, I think some part-timers really work the hours. I know a guy who stays awake 5 hours every night to work his online business and about 3 hrs during the day to do offline prospecting.
To me, he achieves more than some so-called full-timers.
Thanks for the contribution. Always a joy seeing your comments.
Tosin
Well I’d love to help but it’s my first visit and I had to Google what MLM was!

No worries man. Good to have you here.
No worries Dan. Glad to have you on my blog.
Great post, Tosin! I appreciate your sharing.
I would like to say that Lie Number 5 (Product doesn’t matter) is a HUGE one! If the products are not great, even if someone can build a big team, I can assure you that the team would not last. This is mainly because there are many newer brands of products or services available in the marketplace. Without UNIQUE products or services, there is no solid foundation for the business.
I’d like to add the 7th Lie (a controversial one, I believe):
“If it is to be, it is up to me!”. I would say that this is HALF a lie because you can still succeed without a great support team, mentor or proven-system. My point is, there is a lack of energy in the team….meaning – the road to success would be a much rougher one. Yes, you will still get there… but at what cost? Most importantly, is it wise to follow a rough path when there is well constructed one,AND, with someone holding your hand?
Viola Tam
Hi Viola,
Yeah, isnt it terrible that people fall prey to that lie? Without unique products, there is no solid foundation for the success of the business.
It’s also true that alot can be done by aligning yourself with a supportive team instead of doin it alone. In as much as you still have to do the grunt work, being part of a solid team surely beats anything else.
Thanks
Tosin
There are so many scams in MLM industry that most people when they hear something about MLM they just run away. The truth is that most MLM systems try to promote their system by using these lies, and there are only a few honest that really worth your time and effort…

I agree, Kostas. The success of alot of MLM systems thrives on lies that have got people sucked in.
Thanks

Great tips, and all true as far as I’m concerned. The one thing that always threw me off was the way they show you the presenter’s big house, fancy car, fancy watch, 11 month vacations, etc.
Sure I wanted all those things, but I knew without question that it wouldn’t be as easy as they were trying to let on.
Sadly if two people came at it from two different approaches.
Hype: cars, house, money, etc
Truth: like you showed above
The hype group would probably have more sign ups. Sad but true.
Warren@Internet Marketing recently posted..My Sure Fire Way To Gain More Traffic
Hi Warren,
In as much as the fanciful stuffs are real, people are led to believe that it comes in an instance. People are led to even believe that it can happen on autopilot. We all know that this isnt true.
Ironically, in my experience, I have found out that more people respect and are drawn to candor than we think. And also, people who come in with a realistic expectation tend to last longer.
Thanks
Tosin
Here’s another one: customers don’t matter. Any MLM that isn’t focused on bringing in retail customers — rather than getting people to sign up as distributors — should be avoided. Not only is it difficult to keep a company afloat when there are no customers who don’t also receive a commission, it also might bring the business to the attention of a state or federal agency. If that happens, the company can be shut down without any notice and your business would then be gone in an instant.

Hi Lesa,
You are right, it’s companies like that that gives MLM a bad rap.
So good to have your insights.
Tosin
I love this Tosin:) So true and refreshing:)
Okay… 7th one – you don’t need any money to start up. Admittedly you don’t need a lot of money but you do need some just for hosting, emails etc. plus if you struggle with the computer side you may need help with a blog.

Ha ha Lilach,
Dont you just love this lie? How people could possibly believe that they would go into business without spending money is ridiculous.
This is entrepreneurship for God sake and anyone who wants to do well must have a budget.
Thanks
Tosin
Awesome posts, I like the one on joining more than one MLM companies, its almost impossible to succeed. I am trying to figure out how to do this. Thanks Tosin.
Godwin Okoduwa recently posted..How to set-up a FREE popup page for your WordPress blog
Yeah Godwin,
It looks attractive but it is almost impossible like you said.
Now some might take that as meaning not to use products of other MLM companies, that’s not what this is about. Of course you can use or join other MLM companies to enjoy the products, but building a business is extremely difficult.
Thanks
Tosin
Only 6? I’m sure you can get a list that will extend through next week. Thank goodness for sites like yours that assist folks with the straight scoop!

Yeah, I am sure there are some many lies, but you’d agree with me that some are more pronounced and dangerous than others.
Perhaps you could help us with some.
Thanks
Tosin
Hi Tosin,
Those are all so true. I know once I felt pressured to join a company and then the uplines were upset that we weren’t going to 3 meetings a week. We had no idea what we had gotten ourselves into!

Hi Tosin,
I love how your “tell-like-it-is” stance. Although I’m not in the MLM business, I have been approached multiple times and each of the untruths you share above, in addition to the one that Edwin Arenas mentioned in the 1st comment, have been repeated to me in one form or another. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and honesty.
